Pen-y-ghent: a there and back

This is a short up and back which could be done as part of a wider circular walk. Pen-y-ghent is one of the 3 Yorkshire Peaks, the other two being visible from the top of Pen-y-ghent.

Whernside, Ingleborough and Pen-y-ghent together constitute the Three Peaks in the Yorkshire Dales. Pen-y-ghent itself is very exposed and on the occasions I’ve climbed it, always has a howling gale blowing over it.

This walk was an up-and-back to the trig point at 694m following part of the Pennine Way. It’s a short and sharp walk, with a hefty climb up the ridge along the vertical stone wall, pictured here.

After a gentle climb for approx 1.5km, the path kicks right at which point the majority of the climb unfolds. Here you can see the path following the line of the wall until it hits the ridge line.

Nearing the ridge, the views open up to reveal Littondale below to the south east…

Looking to the South West back down the path just climbed…

Having reached the top, views over to Morecambe Bay, some 30 miles away were possible…

The trig point on top with views back down the path just trodden…

Just over the stone wall by the Trig point, a sign shows the way…
