Pyrenees: GR11 – Day 0: The Atlantic Coast to Hondarribia

Day 0 is actually a bit of a cheat. The idea was to stay on the GR11 near the start line at Cape Higuer, but since the start point was 4km away from any accommodation, it made sense to try and ‘knock off’ the distance between the start and the hotel to save us walking 4km in the wrong direction on top of what would be a long walk ahead of us.

Having spent far ages trying to find the actual start of the GR11, the intrepid trio (at this point) of Jason, Luca and myself got as near to Cape Higuer as we could. In the picture, the Cape is identified by the lighthouse on the end of the rock.

Days 1-4 were to be walked by 4 of us as a taster of the 47 stages and to see if we fancied coming back for further stages. Geography and timing constraints meant that Day 0 was not possible for one of the group, and he would join us early on Day 1.

That left three of us to start the walk at Cape Higuer. Here we are, ready for the challenge ahead.

Today’s walk was a flat walk along the coast, starting past the harbour in Hondarribia. Over the stretch of water lay France as Hondarribia and nearby, Irun perched right on the boarder with France. Our accommodation was just shy of San Sebastian Airport meaning a very gentle start to the walk across the Pyrenees.

The two pins on the map represent the start and finish points of the day’s walk. Nothing too taxing today, but a decent meal, a few beers and a good night sleep beckoned before a long day of walking tomorrow.
