West Highland Way Day 9: Kinlocheven to Fort William

So this is it. The final day. The 8 prior days have been building up to this, the pinnacle of the walk for me – the finish in Fort William and a chance to see Ben Nevis. It had been our plan to walk up Ben Nevis in the coming days, weather permitting, although other events conspired to put a stop to that.

Shortly after leaving Kinlochleven a path appeared on the right, beckoning us up a path into the woods. At this stage of the day, and in keeping with much of the walk, the weather threatened and we had the odd bit of drizzle to contend with.

The path started to narrow and got steeper the higher up the hillside we went. This was a typical stretch of path in the early part of the woodland.

Fairly quickly we reached a break in the tree line which afforded us our first views of the day. This picture was taken looking south east towards Kinlochleven and a brief glimpse of Loch Leven itself.

At this point the cloud started to lift a little, albeit it was still quite threatening.

From the same vantage point, looking south west, the trees made way to heathland, allowing us more of a look over Loch Leven.

The path flattened and widened, exposing the valley. To the left lay Beinn na Caillich (762m) and to the right was Stob Coire na h-Eirghe (738m).

Various old and abandonned buildings were to be found en route, presumably offering shelter to passers-by in prior days.

Half way to our final destination and Lochan Lunn Da Bhra was visible to the south west.

What was notable on the week’s walk was that (a) everyone seemed to be walking south to north, (b) everyone had about the same amount of walking in them each day, probably more down to a lack of accommodation than anything else, and (c) everyone set off about the same time as each other.

The upshot of this was that we kept bumping into the same people every day and struck up quite the friendship with them. Here’s two such friends trudging up from the lock.

This picture captures the mood as we walked towards the end. Despite walking for hours, the path just kept stretching ahead of us.

Still the rain kept away and allowed us views towards the west.

Finally, the highlight of the week (for me at least). The iconic Ben Nevis. Still unconquered by me, but one of these days…

After many hours of walking, including a fairly hard bit along the road in Fort William and through the town, we made it to the end of the route. Here’s us doing the customary pose on the bench at the end of Fort William High Street.

View of the day was from the waterside in Fort William. The stillness of the water reflects the mountains in the background beautifully.
