West Highland Way Day 6: Tyndrum to Bridge of Orchy

Distance11.4 km
Time2 hrs 30 mins
DifficultyEasy
Good forWide open views of the Highlands

Today felt like a rest day given its limited length. The terrain was east too – a gentle climb along an old military road for the first couple of miles, then a gentle descent to Bridge of Orchy to finish. It was also a second day of beautiful weather.

Within 200m of the start of the walk, slightly uphill and into a clearing, the first view of the day was offered. This is of Mealle Buidhe (653m) which immediately behind Tyndrum to the east.

In keeping with yesterday, the path followed the road, rail and rivers, all the while offering majestic vistas.

A feature of the day was having Beinn Dorain (1076m) looming large ahead of us, firstly directly ahead.

Meanwhile Beinn Chaisteil (886m) kept us company to the right of Beinn Dorain, visible here as we crossed a bridge over Allt Kinglass.

Blessed by warm sunshine, we carried on through open pastures with the various munroes keeping us company throughout. Given the lack of cover I think we dodged a bullet given the likelihood of rain over a 9 day Highland’s walk.

Nearing the end of the day’s walk Beinn Dorain came alongside.

After a short day we finally made it to Bridge of Orchy. This is a picture of the actual bridge in the town of the same name. An odd town as its in the middle of nowhere, a population of 152, one hotel and a full West Coast main Line railway station. Who knew!
